Dear Professor Vandermey,
I heard you were expecting a letter from me!
At first I was a little surprised but then became excited when I realized
how great of an opportunity this is for you to get to know me, not only as a
person but as a writer as well. If
I told you I always enjoyed writing I would be a liar.
We have an open relationship to say the least, meaning that we love each
other’s company most of the time but too much of one another causes bitterness
and tension between us. This past
year writing really disappointed me because I spent so much time and effort into
making it work only to get my ideas crushed. I consistently find myself wasting time
trying to perfect my sentence structure while properly displaying my thoughts
and ideas. I really feel like this
urge to be perfect causes my writing to be wordy which I have just noticed this
past year. Despite the negatives,
I love coming up with ideas, arguments, and stories.
I try to be unique in everything I do and my writing style is no
different; I love to be abstract.
I find it very interesting that our class theme for the year is focused
on visual culture because I have been thinking a lot recently about how
appearance is everything in our society.
If it looks “good” it must be “good”. I am not saying everything we view as
visually unsatisfying is associated with bad quality but it is true that when
something is visually stimulating to us we tend to gravitate towards it. I am a business and economics major
here at Westmont College. Having
interest in the fields of marketing and advertising only adds to the enjoyment
when looking at visual culture. I
love to look at how a business or product is represented and see how the general
population responds to it. It
fascinates me how the simple change of a color or logo can boost revenue simply
because people find it more appealing and trustworthy.
Well I hope this letter finds you in high
spirits.
Sincerely,
Jarratt Rouse
