Potent Smell, Suggestive Image: Successful
Business
The day is clear. Blue skies cover the expanse, the
occasional marshmallow like cloud slowly making its way across the endless
plane. A slight eastwardly ocean
breeze dries out my moist lips as I take up a brisk walk down State
Street. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. The
pattern persists with every red hand and walking figure that flashes from across
the way. The cars speed by in
frustration as the bikes, traffic lights, and pedestrians seem to make their
travels inconceivable. The
homeless taking refuge on the ground, offered only my smile as a donation. Storefront after storefront changing as
my walk endures. The smell of the
bacterial chemicals breaking down from the nearby ocean refreshes my lungs. Then
it hits, all at once, this pungent perfume engulfing my body, a fish in
water.
As I hit the climax of the odor, I found myself staring straight through
the open double doors of Abercrombie& Fitch (A&F).
I stumbled back three steps before finding refuge in a cheaply built
wooden bench. With upright posture
I surveyed the storefront. My eyes
fixing upon each minute detail the store had to offer.
An attractive shirtless model suspended, a perfectly bordered still
frame, the centerpiece. The double
doors locked into place, open and inviting. The friendly teenage girl offering
forced greetings to every new customer who stepped foot inside. Her
voice barely comprehendible through the loud riveting dance music resonating
from within. Ahhhhh chuuuu! The
strong smell of distinct cologne remains overwhelming.
Clean white stucco, attractive to my eye, provides a friendly look. The stucco, constant, as it drops down
into three pillars on either side of the large double doors separated evenly by
two large sections of polished glass accented in black stainless steel. The steel, hard and cold, cuts the
glass into three even sections of window.
Down the middle of the entire display, extended from the edifice, is a
vintage looking sign dangling with “Abercrombie & Fitch” in plain text
simply advertising to all foot traffic.
Five semi-circle windows above the doors and columns provide a
professional feel while retaining the fresh appearance that A&F seem to
pride themselves on. Above the
middle most semi-circle lays the text “Abercrombie & Fitch” once more but
this time in large black lettering for all onlookers to see.
A group of young college students walked by, their faces unpleased with
the stench flowing from the glass double doors. Waving their hands back and forth in
front of their noses implying that the smell is staggering.
Occasionally the opposite occurred and the Individuals faces would become
inquisitive resulting in them walking right through those double doors to find
out more. Each and every girl that
walked by seemed to get a sore neck at exactly the same time, stretching it left
or right so they can sneak a peak of the sexy photo hanging in the center. Women wanted to look at the photo but
tried to disguise it and actually seemed ashamed of their desires.
An elderly couple moseyed by me and to my surprise they walked into the
store. I watched carefully as the
woman pointed to the picture of the male model and they began to share a
chuckle, criticizing the image. An
Asian couple followed not to long after them but rather responded to the catchy
music bumping from the interior.
Their heads began to bob as they enjoyed the smile each of them had to
offer.
All of these components are meant to have a particular impact and I
believe they are represented to perfection. A&F tries to promote a lifestyle
and they know their target market (the young, attractive and affluent) and they
cater to this sector through their sex appeal, distinct aroma, and hip
music. This idea of aesthetic
beauty is embedded in human culture today and it is meant to have an impact on
the consumer so that if they buy A&F clothing they will be seen as that same
kind of beautiful the store represents.
The storefront was simple yet elegant and had the perfect inviting tone
that attracts more shoppers. The
three white pillars on each side and the windows in-between, separated into
segments of three, were purposely placed because the odd numbers are more
attractive to the eye. The entire
storefront interpellates the consumer and has the intended effect of enticing
the beautiful but will always fall short because images interpellate everyone
differently.
